I’ve been thinking a lot about ’starting rituals’ lately. You know, the routines you create for yourself to get yourself going. I’ve found that the best time to create a starting ritual is first thing in the morning (I’m so tempted to write ‘duh!’ here).
For me, it starts by not hitting that awful snooze button – in fact, I removed the snooze option from my alarm! I used to hit the snooze button every 9 minutes for 1-2 hours or so, and I would eventually get up feeling frazzled and over-tired – not a great way to start the day, right? By choosing to get up, I have made my first decision of the day and it feels pretty empowering. I have broken one of my worst habits and by doing so, the rest of the day looks promising.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Success is not an action, but a habit.”
If I don’t go to gym in the morning, my routine usually involves cuddling with Sherlock for a bit and then meditating for at least 10-15 minutes or so. Sometimes I do some stream of consciousness writing in my journal where I let my thoughts flow onto paper and it’s a great way to release any concerns or worries. I use this time to remind myself of the things I’m grateful for and to set my intentions for the day ahead. When I start my morning this way, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. It puts me in control and it’s the best feeling ever.
